At Breath of Fire’s space in Grand Central Arts Center in Downtown Santa Ana

A FREE, FUN and FOUNDATIONAL workshop series focusing on physical storytelling and for ANYONE ready to embrace the adventure of moving out of their head and into their body to express themselves through physical storytelling. Designed to assist individuals through games and theater exercises to:

• Build confidence in self expression
• Work with others - ensemble building
• Learn acting skills, language, and terminology
• Explore and experience the role of storyteller
• Have FUN!

What Workshop Participants should bring:

• Come to class dressed for movement:  Closed-toed, rubber-soled shoes; Nothing too tight or too loose; Hair out of face; Nothing too precious that could get damaged through movement.
• Be prepared to crawl, be on their belly, stretch, bend and jump. They should be open to being on the floor.
• Bring water and possibly a towel.
• A notebook or journal with a writing utensil as prompts will be given during class. Also for the purposes of taking notes or jotting down thoughts/ideas.

MEET MERCY VASQUEZ, OUR RESIDENT TEACHING ARTIST:

MERCY VASQUEZ is a Director, Playwright, Actor and Teaching Artist. As a Director, she has worked with many theaters throughout Southern California. Her directorial work was recognized in 2014 when her production of Our Town won the title of Best Play in Orange County by CETA (California Educational Theatrical Association). A strong believer in building community through theater, in 2013 she was part of the directorial team on the critically acclaimed theatrical production, The Long Road Today. This was a project devised in partnership with South Coast Repertory, Diagalos and Santa Ana community members. In 2021, she was honored to have her piece, Such Things I’ve Seen, published in a celebrated compilation entitled, The COVID Monologues. In 2019, her work as a playwright was also recognized by Company of Angels Theater for her short play, The Housewives of 2049. Breath of Fire selected her play, La Canción de los Pajaritos for performance in their Latinx New Works Festival. Later in 2014, this piece would be performed as a staged reading at Company of Angels Theater in Los Angeles. From 2008 to present, several of her plays for young audiences were performed through SCR’s Youth Conservatory. From 2006 to 2010 she was the Director of the Voices Unheard program at Greenway Arts Alliance, where she mentored young playwrights to complete full-length pieces to be professionally produced, directed and performed. Throughout her career, she has partnered with various community outreach and charitable organizations. Currently she is developing a TV series intended for Netflix.

Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble (BOFLTE) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that  supports its mission by serving as an incubator for voices that have been historically excluded in theater and on the stage. We do this by providing programming that offers guidance in storytelling, playwriting, producing, and acting. As artist residents of California State University of Fullerton’s Grand Central Arts Center in Downtown Santa Ana, we offer programming that brings seasoned theater artists to facilitate high-quality theater-making workshops in person, and online. No one has ever turned away for lack of experience and our community programming is free.
